Using Stem Cells to Remove Acne Scars!

At MetroMD we make use of stem cells for treating the condition of acne scarring. Many of our patients come to us with severe scarring from acne. This is acne they had when they were teenagers and may now have lived with for two or three decades. We use a very important technique of breaking the skin with a CO2 laser. We use a laser which allows portals of entry, very microscopic tiny holes in the skin, so that the stem cells may migrate down through those portals and restore the structure. What the stem cell does, once it has an access through the skin, the dermis, it will migrate down through these “portals”, we call them, and then spread out along the base of the dermis, and at the base of the floor of these acne scars. With time we see a building up of tissue; we see improvements. What we like to do is use a three-step process where we exfoliate the skin, shear off the top layers of skin, and then apply the stem cells, and then repeat the process in six to eight weeks. This is repeated for a total of three passes with the laser. It’s very effective; we see changes very rapidly. The most important thing is that patients should regard this as a three-step process, and not expect to have everything done following the first treatment. We have a very great success rate. We are very pleased with what we’re seeing, and the stem cells represent a great step forward in the treatment of acne scars. If you have questions regarding acne scarring and the use of stem cells, call us at 323-285-5300.

How to Get Rid of Dark Circles?

Everybody at some point in their lives has had to deal with baggy, droopy skin under their eyes. This cosmetic defect causes us to have dark circles around our eyes. This can be a very unattractive look as you may appear tired and older than you really are.

What’s the solution? At its core, dark circles under the eye are caused by a variety of factors ranging from sleep, hydration and your external environment. Genetics and diet can also play a huge role in the condition of your skin.

The dark circle look is due to the thinning of skin around your eyes. This occurs with age, poor diet along with the effects of other environmental factors. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to prevent aging but we can combat other variables that do!

1. Sleep: Make sure you are getting 8 hours or more of sleep each night! Find what works best with your sleeping pattern and work your life around that.

2. Hydration: Drinking water and maintaining a healthy level of hydration is crucial to the condition of the skin. Essentially dark circles around our eyes is skin so keeping that skin hydrated is important. Drink half your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 200 pounds you should have 100 ounces of water day.

3. Diet: Incorporating more healthy foods that help produce collagen and healthy skin is the most important thing you can do. Avoid processed or junk foods as the oils, fats, and fillers are detrimental to your skin and health. A diet heavy in greens and a lot of liquids (no sugars or refined additives). Foods with a strong source of amino acids are important as those are the building blocks of skin!

Lastly, try a DIY homemade mask, Tumeric and Olive Oil also make a great natural facial mask, 1 tablespoon of olive oil with a teaspoon of turmeric applied under the eyes as a cream 3-4 times week. Try a combination of all these tips and watch your under eye bags and dark circles reduce!

The West Hollywood Carbon Peel at MetroMD

A carbon peel is a revolutionary laser treatment that is completely painless with minimal-to-zero downtime. It is highly beneficial for people with oily skin, blackheads, enlarged pores, dull skin, and acne on the face or body. It is also an excellent way to exfoliate and refresh your skin, providing an instant refreshed appearance and leaving skin feeling softer, smoother and firmer. A layer of liquid carbon is applied to the skin, where it penetrates deep into the pores. Laser light is highly attracted to the carbon particles. When the laser is passed over the area, it destroys the carbon, taking dead skin cells, contaminants and oil with it. This treatment provides several benefits. Cleansing: Carbon has the ability to absorb oil and contaminants from deep within the pores. When the laser is passed over the treatment area it targets and destroys the carbon particles, taking any absorbed material with it. Exfoliating: As the carbon is targeted by the laser, it blasts away dead skin cells, blackheads and effectively exfoliates the skin. The result is softer, radiant skin with reduced pore size and a more even skin tone. Rejuvenating: Carbon peels also target the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, which in turn produces firmer, plumper skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and leaves skin feeling tighter and glowing. Acne and Oil Destroying: The heat produced by carbon peels has 2 additional benefits. It reduces the P.Acnes bacteria responsible for acne, allowing for better management of pimples and outbreaks, and it also shrinks sebaceous glands (oil producing glands), resulting in less oil production, and therefore reducing congestion building up in the pores. Treatments can be performed on any part of the body, including the back and chest. As with all skin treatments, carbon peels should be supplemented by a good skin-care routine, and daily use of a high-spectrum sunscreen. Noticeable results can be experienced after a single treatment, but for maximum long-term results we recommend regular treatments. At MetroMD we offer a special a subscription package for $99/month. With this subscription you receive either a Carbon X Peel facial, or a vitamin IV. You have the flexibility of switching which treatment you receive, as well as gifting or banking any unused treatments. Call us today to inquire or get on the schedule!

Sclerotherapy for Varicose and Spider Veins

Varicose and spider veins effect hundreds of thousands of men and women throughout the United States. These ailments are not only painful, but strip people of their self esteem.

Varicose veins are are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that are also twisted and turning. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin as well. They are most often seen on the legs, chest, or face.

A number of factors predispose a person to varicose veins. These include:

-Heredity (passed on from a parent to a child through genes)
-Occupations that involve a lot of standing, such as seen among nurses, hair stylists, teachers, and factory workers
-Obesity
-Hormonal influences during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
-The use of birth control pills
-A history of blood clots

Other reported causes include trauma or injury to the skin, previous vein surgery, and exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930s.

In most cases of sclerotherapy, the salt solution is injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. At this point, you may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when larger veins are injected. The procedure itself takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

The VI Peel

Our skin begins to lose its youthful glow as we age. Collagen is the protein under our skin that produces its healthy, non-wrinkled appearance. Unfortunately, collagen production decreases as we get older and is directly affected by our exposure to UV rays, pollutants, and an unhealthy diet.

A Vi Peel is a clinical-grade chemical peel that removes the top layer of skin, thereby exposing the younger, healthier layer underneath. The procedure is performed in approximately 30 minutes and requires little downtime. The Vi Peel uses 5 key ingredients which are suitable to treat a variety of skin types as well as improve the tone, texture, quality, clarity of the skin.

Key ingredients:

*Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)

*Retinoic Acid (Vitamin A)

*Salicylic Acid

*Phenol

*L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

Unlike other chemical peels, a Vi Peel doesn’t require skin preconditioning. After the treatment, our patient is then sent home with a post-peel kit and instructions on how to gently care for their skin in during the upcoming days.

The Vi Peel is virtually painless although skin can appear slightly red after treatment. It begins to peel after three days, and the peeling will last for an additional two to three days.

Makeup is not recommended while the skin is peeling. A moisturizer (some will be provided for you) can be applied to diminish the appearance of peeling skin. It is also best to stay out of the sun during the peeling process.

The Vi Peel is the latest skin treatment used to combat the signs of aging. Many people love this procedure so much, they have it done three to four times a year!

Removing Pigments and Redness with the IPL Laser

The IPL laser or the intense pulsed light laser is a photo facial laser. Like other lasers, this is a controlled wound on the skin which causes the skin to heal and rejuvenate during the process. Unlike other lasers, this uses a flashlamp to beam light at the skin (not a laser beam). This means the procedure is much less invasive and requires less downtime when compared to other laser treatments such as the CO2 Laser.

For these reasons, this treatment is perfect for targeting pigmented skin and redness caused by sun exposure. This treatment is perfect for anyone who does not have time for recovery but would still like to treat their skin. A study done in 2004 by Cornell University concluded that the IPL was found to be a “non-invasive, non-ablative method for rejuvenating photoaged skin with minimal adverse events”.

Following a treatment, you will need to avoid sun exposure and exercise for the rest of the day. The following 2-3 days after that we would recommend putting on sunscreen while going out to prevent any sun damage or exposure. If you have any questions regarding the IPL or think it might be the right treatment for you give us a call at 323-285-5300. We can answer any questions you have regarding this treatment!

Fractional CO2 Laser for Acne Scars

Acne scars are a ever-present problem from late adolescence on into our twenties. Until the
advent if the fractional CO-2 lasers, laser treatment with CO-2 often meant painful weeks of
downtime and often a complicated recovery. Now, in 2018 we have the state of the art fractional
CO-2 lasers which remove scars precisely and with little downtime in three to four treatments
spaced at four-to- six-week intervals.

The procedure begins with numbing of the skin. If patients request an injectable pain
medication, that is made available along with an antianxiety medication. After a 45 minute
session of numbing, the procedure begins with the application of the laser across the targeted
areas. Within thirty minutes the procedure is concluded and the areas treated iced. Patients are
discharged with medications to allow them to sleep comfortably and with instructions for post-op
care following the treatment.

The process may be repeated within four to six weeks until the scars are completely removed.
The average treatment plan includes three to four treatments depending on the depth of the
acne scar targeted.
