Botulinum toxin, or Botox, in brief, is a neuromodulator derived from neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum.  Initially procured for use for medical conditions from migraine therapy, hyperhydrosis and others,Botox has recently gained wild popularity for cosmetic use when injected with the intended purpose of paralyzing skeletal muscle.

When used appropriately, botulinum toxin injection is an overwhelmingly safe method for improving cosmetic defects that are caused by or exacerbated by muscle contraction.  Transient in nature, once injected, the effects of Botox can be fully appreciated within 1-3 days, although some individuals require 7-10, and the effects demonstrated for 3-4 months depending on the individual.  Areas of focus for prevention of fine lines and wrinkles associated with wrinkling include, but are not limited to, the following:

Glabellar rhytides

Horizontal lines on the forehead

Lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet)

Depressed brow

Hypertrophic orbicularis oculi muscle

Side effects and contraindications to this cosmetic procedure are few when performed correctly.  Side effects may include swelling or bruising at the injection site, mild headache, or flu-like symptoms. Undesired impairment of muscle function may also occur, but is usually associated with poor injection technique or inappropriate patient selection.
