What are Adult Stem Cells?

An adult stem cell is thought to be an undifferentiated cell present in everyone that can renew itself and can differentiate to specialized cell types of the tissue or organ. The purpose they serve to the human body is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found.

Where do Adult Stem Cells come from?

Adult stem cells are found in in different tissues around the body.  The primary sources for adult stem cell in regenerative medicine are from the bone marrow and from fat.  Both these sources are rich in a specific type of adult stem cell known as a Mesenchymal Stem Cell or MSC.

What is the difference between Adult Stem Cells and Embryonic Stem Cells?

Adult stem cells are cells that are harvested from the patient himself or herself.  These cells are used in many purposes in Regenerative Medicine because they have the ability to turn into a large number of different cell types in the body.  Also, Adult Stem Cells come from the patient themselves which minimizes the chance of rejection and eliminates the need for tissue typing.

Embryonic Stem Cells are stem cells that are from an embryo. These cells are often created in a laboratory setting after combining an unfertilized egg with a sperm.  These cells have the ability to turn into any cell type but since they are from a donor source chances of rejection and tumor formation may occur.  This is a large reason why Adult Stem Cells are being used for regeneration procedure instead of Embryonic Stem Cells.
