What are YAG Laser Treatments?
YAG treatments are a cosmetic laser treatment typically intended for treating the signs of aging. YAG lasers are non-ablative, unlike the CO2 laser, resulting in a shorter downtime period. YAG laser treatments do not remove the top layer of the skin, but instead, the laser penetrates the skin treating both pigment and texture. Unlike the C02 laser that has about 1-2 week downtime the YAG laser has a much more limited downtime. There is virtually no downtime with the YAG laser although we do recommend staying out of the sun the day of the treatment and following day. After the first 24 hours there are no restrictions or side effects.
Who is a good candidate for YAG Laser Treatments?
The reason MetroMD offers a variety of laser treatments is because no two patients or skin concerns are alike. Each case has different needs and may possibly require different types of lasers or even different depths. YAG laser treatments can be used to treat similar concerns to CO2 laser applications but are typically less invasive. YAG treatments maybe be right for you if you have any or a combination of the following concerns:
- Fine facial wrinkles and lines
- Surface scars
- Skin discoloration
- Unwanted body hair
- Veins on the legs and face
How Does it Work?
YAG laser treatments direct intense pulsed or non-pulsed light onto the parts of the skin you are concerned with. You will be provided with eye protection, and your doctor will use a laser machine with a special hand piece with a crystal surface. YAG is an acronym for the composition of the crystal: yttrium, aluminum, and garnet.
This laser is then pressed to the problematic areas of the face or body and emits a light that heats up the skin. This encourages the body to speed up the healing process. Enhanced collagen production and healing can soften fine lines or wrinkles on the face as well as acne scarring. YAG treatments also reduce redness and the sight of veins for a more even tone. This procedure may cause some discomfort, especially in areas of deeper pigment.
